core engineering disciplines and civil engineering is one of them. The uses of civil engineering started from the very beginning of our civilization. It is not also out of scope to mention that still maximum people of our country understand that engineer mean to say Civil Engineer.

Nowadays there are lot of other disciplines and obviously those are not only belongs to engineering discipline but also from different work field which are very helpful to earn a handsome salary to maintain their family.

This is the only one discipline which is not restricted within the government services rather the people having knowledge of this discipline can be established in any other area.

In this context I want to share the story of my life that why I become attracted rather love this discipline. In my childhood, I came in touch of a carpenter as he was engage for some wooden work in my tenant’s room.

On that time I used to sit beside the carpenter uncle, regularly, just after coming from my school and taking my lunch and enjoy the time with them and the senior carpenter was very much polite and a good human being.

He also likes to tell me new stories regularly. This continues for 5-7 days and that day came when the story told by the carpenter change the thinking of my life.

He told me that few years ago he was engaged in making some wooden almirah for one of his client in his house. It has taken few days to complete. Middle of that he discovered that he made some fault in the almirah. A little hesitation arrived in his brain that will he correct that or not!

But it is really so small and technical that it become almost impossible to understand or detect the fault and it was also time consuming to rectify that. So he decide not to correct the fault rather ignore it.

Anyhow on the very next day there was a puja in the owner’s house. Lot of invitees were there to attend the puja. On the day the incident occurred and the carpenter was telling the story to me and at that time his eyes become brighter and voice reflects that he become surprised.

One of the invitee probably the brother of the owner of the house, came to the spot where he was making the almirah, stopped for a minute and then come to the carpenter and told him “Mr Dinesh, I come to know form my brother that you are a very good carpenter and you are known to him since ling. Anyhow I know that you obviously rectify the fault occurred in the almirah but it is simply a discussion with you. Please do the correction” and after that he showed the fault properly and also suggested the easiest way to rectify the correction.

That incident makes him puzzled. How it is possible to detect the tiny fault by other person and within a moment. It makes him surprised because it is almost difficult for himself to detect if not done by him. So automatically eagerness grows within him to know about the person. He asked the owner on next day and come to know that he is his younger brother and stays outside due to his job and he is a civil engineer.

This story was really a life changing story in my life. It is the one of the strongest reason why I have a boundless respect about this discipline and finally it motivated me to be a civil engineer.

But at the beginning we should know that what is civil engineering is. It is basically that engineering discipline which helps to understand each and every civil works lucidly, get a insight view of any problems associate with civil engineering perspective and to implement/ solve it practically. It covers a vast region of engineering and also practical problems.

It may starts from designing a building or a factory or any type of structure. It may cover irrigation oriented problems like design and construction of a dam, cannel restoration and lot more. It also covers the design and construction of Microwave tower which is most essential today for proper mobile connectivity. It also cover any type of water treatment plant which is required to purify the water and then to stored in storage tank (underground/surface/ overhead) and finally to distribute to the people.

It covers sewerage treatment plant which helps our society to dispose of the sewerage waste in our environment safely after processing it. Civil Engineering is dealing with roads which are the most important part of the transport system. There are infinite numbers of application of civil engineering exist in practical. So automatically it generates lot of job opportunity for civil engineers.

Now I would like to share the important information regarding “why a civil engineering student is jobless” in present time! There are lots of parameters like economical down of any state or country, mentality of students to accommodate the work environment, variation of starting package etc.

But another most vital reason is the competency of civil engineering students, specially now. Before judging it, keeps little more patience to understand the problem. We have to understand that competencies of students are not only related with civil engineering discipline only but it is applicable for each and every type of discipline.

Engineering students should have a analytical mind to analyze the problem associate with any projects in every steps and it will help him to find out the solution, Now a sound mathematical knowledge/ background can help a student to do the analysis easily and in better mode.

But nowadays a lot of civil engineering student is coming from arts and commerce background. Naturally for those students, it is not possible to accustom with those problems and to find the solution easily. Now there is a lot of gap between industries requirement and the learning in engineering colleges / universities. Anyhow these entire lacunas may be possible to overcome. For all civil engineering students including those are coming from other background than mathematics/science need to make a bridge between their studies and practical civil engineering problem.

A candidate being passed from a college or university with civil engineering discipline can be associated with any project as a project Engineer, may act as an estimator in the field of valuation, and may work as a draftsman. He / She also can join in different private, public and government sectors. They even can start as an entrepreneur, self dependent or as a businessman. For service they can start with a salary amounting Rs.10000/- to Rs.100000/- depending on their credibility like his previous experience, educational background, and understanding with the industries requirement etc. But a fresher with arts, commerce background also can start with a low salary and with time they easily can earn a very good amount of salary.

Now I want to highlight on a very crucial matter that is only The peoples belong to these discipline can start their journey in the field of business/ self dependent / entrepreneurship with very small amount of money or investment and after that with time they gain lot of experience and also became highly eligible to earn a lot.

This discipline is a very high earning discipline at the same time a very prestigious job. So choice of civil engineering discipline is undoubtedly a very good choice for carrier.

It is also not irrelevant to mention that in almost every case, we stop our learning completely after passing out from the Concern College/ university. But they should continue self studies or self up gradation throughout of their whole life span. It will help them to boost up their confidence by reducing the deficiency of the knowledge and gap between the theoretical knowledge and practical/ industrial problems.
